The Day the Silence Spoke Back

Dear Frenchie,

There was a time I believed that once someone passed, they were simply gone—out of reach, out of touch, out of time. The physical pain of your absence has been unbearably hard. The silence I’ve felt is so loud, it hurts.

But then something changed.

Slowly, quietly, profoundly—I began to hear you. To feel you with me.

It didn’t happen all at once. It started with a whisper of intuition, a warmth in a room where I stood alone, a flicker of a memory that came alive in real time. I thought I was imagining it—but I desperately wanted it to be real. Over time, those feelings returned, again and again, with clarity, with power, and with love.

Grief has cracked me wide open. And in that open space, your spirit found room to enter my heart and soul. Thank you for that.

I’ve realized that spirits don’t always come with flashing lights or dramatic signs. Often, it’s subtle. It’s the beautiful sunsets and the wondrous sunrises I now love to wake up to.
It’s the song that plays when I’m thinking of you.
It’s the memory of you learning the Stanky Leg and how happy that made you.
It’s the feather on my doorstep or the ladybugs that continue to show up.
The dream that felt more like a visit than a vision.
It’s the way my body chills just before a wave of peace washes over me.

The more I’ve leaned into trust, the stronger the connection has grown. I began talking to you—first out loud, then in thought, and sometimes just through tears. And always, you responded—in your own way, not in words, but in presence. A presence so unmistakable, I can only call it sacred.

I’ve come to understand: love doesn’t die. Energy doesn’t end. And your spirit hasn’t abandoned me. Quite the opposite—you have stepped into my heart and reassured me that you are with me anytime I need to tap into that spirit.

Because of your visits, I’ve learned to stop and enjoy the small things—like you did during that year and a half before you passed away. My awareness is palpable. Strikingly overwhelming at times, but I am grateful for the continued lessons I’m learning about you.

I’ve learned to meditate by sitting in the silence, breathing air into my lungs, and feeling your presence wrap around me like a soft embrace. I only remember the good times we shared. I don’t take your presence lightly—it is profound.

Our loved ones are not “lost.” They are transformed. They walk with us, whisper to us, and when we get quiet enough to listen, they answer.

Your mom did that with me after she passed—her first visit was when I had to be resuscitated during a very long and dangerous surgery. It only lasted a few minutes, but what took place with her seemed like much longer. When I opened my eyes, I was in Heaven. Your mom was there, holding her arms out, wanting me to run into them—and I did. Her eyes were as blue as I remembered, like the Caribbean Sea. She told me Heavenly Father had asked her to visit with me, and she instructed me about three things I still needed to do here on earth.

On that visit, your dad was there too. I hugged him and felt the strength of his embrace. I told him I didn’t want to go back—that my life was too hard. He didn’t hesitate. He waved his hand to his left and said, “Do you see those children playing? Those are your grandchildren, and they need your influence and example in their lives. Now it is time for you to return to your life on earth.”

Then he looked at your mother and said something I later found peculiar: “It’s time for Monya to go back to her life on earth, and it’s time for you and I to get back to work.” Get back to work? What did that mean? I had so many questions as I tried to make sense of what had happened to me that day.

The second time your mother appeared to me was in a dream. We walked through a beautiful garden as she explained one of her “jobs” in Heaven: she oversaw it. She asked me about you, whether you were treating me with love and respect, just as Ray had treated her. She asked if I was happy. We talked about spiritual things, and I remembered why I loved her so much. She still visits me in my dreams.

I felt it when my brother, Lance, passed away. I carried shame and guilt, wondering if I had taken him to the hospital that night instead of worrying about him keeping me awake, could I have saved him?

But when Lance visited me not long after his death, he placed his hand on mine as I prayed about him. I reveled in those moments, eyes closed, listening as he spoke. I heard him as if he were alive and standing beside me. He said:

"Monya, my death is not your fault. It was my time to go, and I am happy. Now it’s time for you to move out of Mom and Dad’s house and start living. Go and enjoy your new life with Eric—he is a good person."

And then he was gone.

When Jami was diagnosed with breast cancer, I knew I needed to visit her—but I didn’t. I felt uncomfortable. How could I face someone I loved so much, someone who had already suffered so deeply?

After her death, I punished myself with guilt for not going to her. That pain became even harder to bear when I was diagnosed with breast cancer myself.

But I began to pray about Jami, and the spirit I felt was hers. She assured me she knew I loved her—and she understood why I didn’t come. She told me that now, having received the same diagnosis, I would appreciate it. She reminded me to focus on the fight ahead. She told me I would be blessed through the process and that Heavenly Father would never leave my side.

She was right. I didn’t waste energy worrying about who came to visit or who said the wrong things. I gave grace—because I remembered how I felt with Jami. And when I told you that story, you were mesmerized. You asked why you’d never had experiences like that.

I’ll never forget what I said:
I told you that you didn’t need the reassurance like I did. You were raised in a very different environment from mine.

For me, those spiritual encounters kept me grounded, alive, conscious. They carried me when I felt I couldn’t go on. It wasn’t always easy—in fact, it was humiliating at times—but I made it through.

And finally, there was Black Rock Beach.

The Lord allowed you to visit me in the very place where you took your last breath. I believe He escorted you there and left us to share sacred time together.

You told me you saw me on the beach that day—you knew I would never be the same again. You told me about where you are. You said you are so happy that where you are, there are no negative feelings or thoughts. You said Heaven is real—it’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever seen. Then you shared your spiritual connection with Heaven and the life you now have. It was the first time I had ever seen you in this light, and it was so refreshing.

You told me you were excited to be allowed to visit me. And that I have a gift—a gift to feel the spirits of those we love who have passed.

You told me you knew you couldn’t help me any other way—but visiting me was enough. It was everything. You shared your love for the Lord and assured me He lives and loves us all. Those spiritual thoughts you shared with me are my favorite—because I had never heard you speak with such intention.

I know now, without a doubt, that there is life after death. And I can tune in to those feelings when needed. I didn’t want our moment to end. But when it did, I looked at my watch, stunned that we had spent four hours together.

I treasure your love and your presence in my life. I feel you often. And I am eternally grateful to Heavenly Father for that day on the beach—and for the life we shared.

As rocky as the beginning of our marriage was, I will always be proud of us—of our grit and determination to keep going. The world said we were a statistic, that we’d never make it. But we did. And we both know we had a beautiful love story. It is more evident to me now how much you love me.

Thank you for loving me the way you have, and for continuing to show me your beautiful, vulnerable heart. I love this part of you.

Now, when I feel that gentle tug in my soul—or the warmth over my entire body—I no longer wonder. I know.

I am a special daughter of God, protected and guided by the spirits of those who love me.

I am not alone.
I never was.
And neither are you.

I am in love with our eternal companionship.

I love you. And I look forward to seeing you again.

Love,
Me, your cute wifey

WHY? Maui Day 5

My sweetheart died on February 21, 2024. My heart is broken. The day started out great. We woke up, and Eric was making breakfast. We decided to spend another day at the beach. Dwight and Eric wanted to snorkel.

We arrived at the beach and found our space. There were quite a few people at Black Rock Beach. Eric kissed me and said, "I love you; see you soon." I said, "I love you and better see you soon." This was different for Frenchie to say that to me. I have told him for years that when someone passes away, he should never say goodbye, always say, 'See you soon.'

Jori took this picture of
Dwight and Eric as they walked off.
Eric was dead within an hour.

Jori and I settled in. I put on my headphones and relaxed. Soon, two women ran down the beach, yelling, "Jori or Monya?" Jori answered them, and we were running toward Dwight in a panic. I immediately knew something was wrong with Eric, and my heart started beating hard. He was lying on the beach, and paramedics were working on him. I stood by while paramedics worked on him for what seemed an hour. It was scary; I was screaming through my tears, "Don't leave me, Eric. Wake up, please." or "Heavenly Father, please don't take him from me." I begged and pleaded while listening to this machine say, "Start compressions" and then "Stop compressions." A very kind policeman stood by my side when he said, "There is nothing more we can do; he is gone. I'm so sorry we are calling it at 12:45." I dropped to my knees, yelling, and now hysterically crying, "No, please, no. Keep trying."

I watched as they wrapped Eric in something to carry him to the ambulance. The policeman walked with me to the ambulance. I kept thinking. "What is happening? This can't be true. We arrived at what looked like a garage (holding area for the dead). The paramedics got Eric out of the ambulance, and the policeman got me a chair and then said, "You can stay with him for as long as you want." I thought, as long as I wanted ...? Maybe he'll wake up if he feels my warm body on him. I began rubbing his chest and arms with my hands, praying for him to wake up ... why wasn't he listening to me ... WAKE UP, PLEASE, WAKE UP ... my voice fell on deaf ears, and my tears fell on his face as I held him close.

Soon, Jori and Dwight showed up but gave me space and time to say, "See you soon."

Jori took this picture from behind me.
Dwight and I shared some exhausting
tears. A very kind Hawaiian woman
wiped the sand off Eric's face.

We stayed until the paramedics returned and told us they had another call. We would have to say our 'goodbyes.' Then they wheeled him into a room with another dead body. My head was spinning. I am so grateful to Jori and Dwight for being with us. Jori took some notes from the other policeman standing with us. All I could think about was him being in that little closet with another body. The next thing I knew, I was on the ground and pretty sure I took Jori down with me; I fainted and not very gracefully. I felt so bad for Jori, and I was pretty embarrassed.

I called Blake to tell him on our ride back to the resort. This surprised Jori and Dwight, who now tell me we had decided not to call him until we were safe in the resort condo. Blake asked me, "What's wrong?" When he heard me crying, I said, "Blake dad died today." He raised his voice and said, "What? Nooo." I handed the phone to Jori because I could not talk.

Maui Day Four

Today, Frenchie got up early. He wanted to see the sunrise, and he was excited that Jori was awake and wanted to go with him. Then he started helping make breakfast. Dwight was next up and helped finish the breakfast. I had a protein drink. We all put on our swimsuits and went on another adventure.

Today we went whale watching, boy there were a lot of whales Eric was in Heaven.

We had so much fun that it felt like we were on our honeymoon—actually, it felt better than that. Eric and I are so happy right now. I'm grateful for him. Eric works so hard and has always provided for his family. Family means everything to him, I have encouraged him to have good connections with each of his children. It makes me really sad that the perception they have about my mothering is completely different than my perspective. I don't remember ever having problems we couldn't fix while I raised them. Eric keeps telling me not to worry; he will reunite the family. I have my doubts those girls are really, really angry with me. But for now, it's just me and Frenchie. This past year has been hard, but he and I are moving forward with or without the girls in my life. We are getting older and want to spend the rest of our time together having fun.

Monya

Maui Day 3

Today we went to a beautiful beach. It was called McKenna Beach. Of course, Eric got bored just sitting, so he and Dwight took a little hike over the mountain. I knew Dwight would be careful to ensure Eric would not overdo it.

Jori and I stayed. We were good just visiting with each other on the beach. Around an hour or two later, the boys came back with big smiles on their faces. I asked Eric what in the world was making him smile so big. He said, "On the other side of that rock mountain is the most beautiful lagoon." I said, "Oh wow, I wish I wasn't worried about hiking over those rocks. I'd go with you." He laughed and said, "It was quite a hike, I took my time, but it was worth it. It's a naked beach ..." I was so surprised I giggled and said, "Seriously? What did you and Dwight do." Now Dwight, Jori, and Eric were all laughing. Eric said, "Well, Dwight said to me, "you ready to go for it?" Then I said, "Hell yeah, we took off our swimsuits and went swimming." I roared, laughing, and said, "You know everyone on the beach thought you two were 'partners'?" Dwight and Eric laughed and said simultaneously, "Who cares? We had so much fun and just made a memory." I could understand that Eric always says "Life is Good."

Maui Day 2

Oh boy, today was a good day in Hawaii; well, really, when is it not a good day in Hawaii?

We went to the beach, ate at a food truck, and laughed with Jori and Dwight. They are the best friends, and we have had so much fun spending time with them.

Having one-on-one time with Eric has been so fun; he's so happy. He kept saying how beautiful Maui was and wanted to look at real estate for a small home. The man loves real estate and the beach. His mom served her mission in Hawaii, and we talked a bit about her. We both miss her; Eric is very private and does not talk about her too much except with me. He loved her dearly, and seeing where she served made him feel closer to her. I love seeing him so happy. He enjoys life and never takes for granted every breath of life. Today was a good day!!!

MAUI Here We Come Day 1

This morning we boarded a Southwest plane with Dwight and Jori Udall, friends we have loved for more than forty years. Yes, Southwest Airlines. Eric and I have not flown on any other airline than American Airlines in 19 years, but we wanted to be on the same flight as the Udall's. So much for a non-stop, the pilot announced we needed to land in LAX to get fuel.... WHAT?

When we arrived at the airport Frenchie got a wheelchair for me and told them I needed to pre-board. I was perfectly fine to walk, I asked him why he did that and he said, "I forgot to check in and this is the only way we can pick a seat with Jori and Dwight." Okay, I was down for a little sneaky sneaky!!

Frenchie was so excited to use his new iPad to watch movies on. Problem is he didn't sync it to his phone and could not do it on the airplane. I looked over at him and he was watching Barbie on his phone, I laughed and asked why would he want to watch that movie, it's just not him. He said, "Haleigh told me it was really good, and I like it." Okay then, have fun I thought.

When we arrived to Maui Frenchie was so excited for our first stop to be at COSTCO. He is a COSTCO junkie, SAMS is a close second. I loved watching him, he was like a child in a candy store. He found not one but three swimsuits, but still didn't want to pay full price. I reminded him that he has lost so much weight none of his other suits would fit him. He has worked so hard to be healthy and he has lost over 130 pounds. He was so proud of himself and I was proud of him too, the man loves food. Since his heart attack he has been eating clean with me. I showed him instead of looking at what he couldn't eat he should be looking at all the wonderful things he could eat. It's been a journey and we deserve this vacation.

The resort we stayed at was absolutely beautiful, Jori and Dwight have a time share in Maui. We told them we would love to come with them anytime they need companions. We were exhausted that first night. So off to our room we knelt and said our prayers holding hands, then fell asleep.

Happy Birthday CJ, today we celebrate you!!

A New Way of Life (Anti Cancer)

A New Way of Life

We made it home from beautiful Hawaii. On the last day, we were all lying under some palm trees on a grassy area at the beach. I couldn't help but think about going home and returning to reality. It has been so fun to spend time with Kaitlyn and Brian, but I know that things will not be so easy-going when I get home. I watched the white fluffy clouds pass in front of the sun, making it a little darker and less hot then, suddenly, the clouds would move and again make it brighter; I could again feel the warmth on my skin. So much like my life has been this past year, clouds of darkness have made it hard to see the future; sometimes, waiting for the cloud to move made me feel alone and helpless. Then, with Heavenly Father's help, he would lift those clouds, and I would feel warmth and comfort; knowing that HE loves me and will never leave gives me hope and a feeling of relief.

I really hate the waiting game that VILLAIN patients have to live. I know I don't want to live in fear of everything I eat and everything I expose myself to, but I also can't treat this as if it were about pneumonia or a broken bone. Cancer is not a thing of my past, and the VILLAIN is now a part of my life, my new life.

I finished reading the book ANTI CANCER by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, Ph.D. I was totally intrigued by the information in this book and wonder why more oncologists don't suggest it to VILLAIN patients. I will refer to some of the information I learned in this book in future blogs because I think it is crucial.
Did you know:
1. Cancer feeds on sugar, cane and beet sugar, corn syrup, etc
2. Bleached flour, including white bread, white pasta, etc
3. Vegetable oils such as soybean, sunflower, corn, and trans fats
These three sources contain none of the proteins, vitamins, minerals, or omega-3 fatty acids we all need to keep our bodies functioning correctly, and they directly fuel the growth of the VILLAIN.

Tests have shown that women with high blood sugar levels (or who are diabetics) are 7 x more likely to develop breast cancer. We have become a nation of people who do not want to take the time to prepare home-cooked meals for our families. It is much easier to get "take out" I believe with all my heart that we need to get back to basics, and we need to be aware of what we are putting in our children's mouths. Processed foods, which are at every fast food restaurant in America, feed cancer cells. A list of recommended foods from the book are:
1. Green tea helps to reduce the growth of new vessels needed for tumor growth and metastases, and it is a beautiful antioxidant and detoxifier.
2. Olives and Olive Oil black olives are richer in antioxidants than green. Olive oil should be a cold-pressed extra virgin; you should get one tablespoon of oil daily, used in cooking fish, tofu, meat, veggies, or a salad.
3. Turmeric and Curry: these are the most potent natural anti-inflammatory; in laboratories, it was proven to help enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy and reduces tumor growth. It can be added to olive oil with a pinch of black pepper, then added to veggies, soups, salad dressings, add a few drops of agave nectar to remove the bitter taste.
4. Ginger: a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant much more effective than vitamin E. It acts against specific cancer cells and can help with nausea from chemotherapy and radiation.
5. Cruciform Vegetables: cabbages (Brussel sprouts, bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.) contain anti-cancer molecules. They prevent precancerous cells from developing into malignant tumors.
6. Garlic, Onions, Leeks, Shallots, Chives: Garlic is one of the oldest medicinal herbs dating back to 3000 bc. During WW1, they were used to prevent infections. They all promote cell death in the colon, breast, lung, prostate cancer, and leukemia.
7. Vegetables and Fruit rich in Carotenoids: Carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, persimmons, apricots, beets, and all bright colored fruits and vegetables (orange, red, yellow, and green) all have the proven ability to inhibit the growth of cells of several cancer lines including brain cancer. A study that tracked breast cancer patients for 6 years showed that those who consumed the most foods rich in carotenoids lived longer than those who consumed less.
8. Soy: they block the stimulation of cancer cells. Asian women who have eaten soy since adolescence have fewer cases of breast cancer, the ones who do have breast cancer are much less aggressive.
9. Mushrooms: A study done in 2009 showed that women who consumed 10 grams of mushrooms per day reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by 64 %.
10. Herbs and Spices: rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil, and mint are rich in essential oils, and they help reduce the spread of cancer by blocking the enzymes they need.
11. Seaweed: slow down the growth of breast cancer cells, prostate, skin, and colon cancer.
12. Berries: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and cranberries are all good for eliminating cancer cells.
13. Plums, Peaches, and Nectarines: Researchers have proven that these are just as powerful as the berries and at much fewer costs. They had a significant effect on the growth of breast cancer.
14. Citrus Fruit: oranges, tangerines, lemons, and grapefruits contain anti-inflammatory flavonoids.
15: Pomegranate Juice: an incredible antioxidant and has been used in Persian medicine for thousands of years; it reduces the development of prostate cancer, daily consumption slows the establishment of prostate cancer by 67%
16. Dark Chocolate: needs to be more than 70 % cocoa. It contains antioxidants, and the molecules in dark chocolate slow the growth of cancer cells. You need to eat at least 20 grams a day (one-fifth of a bar). AVOID ANY MILK CHOCOLATE
17. Vitamin D: Skin cells produce vitamin D when exposed to the sun. It has recently been proven that a significant supply of vitamin D reduces the risk of several types of cancers considerably by more than 75%. 20 minutes of noonday sun exposure to the entire body is sufficient, and be aware that over-exposure can lead to skin cancer.
18. Omega -3's: They reduce the cancer cell growth in many tumors lung, breast, colon, prostate, kidney. They also act to reduce the spread of tumors in the form of metastases. Remember that the larger the fish, the higher it is in the food chain and the more contaminated. Smaller fish are much healthier for you. Flaxseeds are also rich in omega-3s.
19. Probiotics: Organic yogurts and kefir are good sources of probiotics, and I purchase them at Sprouts. These are the good bacteria your intestines need; garlic, onions, tomatoes, asparagus, bananas, and wheat are excellent sources.
20. Foods rich in Selenium: Selenium is found in the soil; vegetables and cereals grown organically contain large quantities of selenium. Selenium boosts the immune system and the effects of antioxidant mechanisms on the body.

Anyone who has a history of cancer in their family should take note of all this information and consider establishing a new way of life. We could all probably improve our lives and our family's lives by changing a few things we eat and introducing fresh foods to our children.

Hawaii day 3 and 4

Fruit, Yogurt, and Granola are my favorite things to eat.

Freezing at the falls

Hiking at the falls, there were many places to take pictures.

Kaitlyn was scared to jump off the rock, so Brian jumped with her.

Matsumoto's shaved ice

Eric and I at Pearl Harbor

Leonards Bakery is the Best

Malasadas at Leonards Bakery

We are still in Hawaii, and it's a very laid-back atmosphere compared to the busy life of Arizona. Eric has been able to relax and not worry about work (he's only been on his cell phone a few times), and he gets to sleep in if he wants to. Kaitlyn and Brian are fun to be with, I told them yesterday that I have not belly laughed in so long, and with them, it's an ongoing thing, and over the silliest things. I find myself thinking less and less of the VILLAIN while here. It still lingers in my head but at least not as much as when I am home. I'm going to work on that when I get home.

Our days have been filled with food, water, and exercise. We ate malasadas. If you've never had one, they are heaven in your mouth, much like a doughnut (but better, much, much better). They are filled with either chocolate pudding, coconut cream, or bavarian cream. Eric got the month's flavor, and it was filled with guava cream. Or you can just eat them plain with cinnamon sugar on top. We always look forward to having Malasadas when we come to Hawaii, and Leonards Bakery is the best.

We had shaved ice at Matsumoto's, a lot of the famous actors have eaten here, and we love it too. Brian and Kaitlyn said it was the best-shaved ice, and Eric agreed.

Pearl Harbor was a great way to spend our Sunday afternoon; we saw many LDS people there, probably because it was free of charge and an excellent way to spend some family time together without going to the beach. Yesterday we hiked up to the falls; I watched Kaitlyn and Brian get in the water and decided I would not do that to my body. From the look on Kaitlyn's face, I could tell it was freezing. Kaitlyn and Brian swam to the falls. We took some great pictures of them. Then I was waiting with a towel for her when she got out of the water. After much coaxing, I was talked into swimming with Eric to the falls. Yes, it was freezing, but Kaitlyn was right when she said I need to take more risks and try more things, NO REGRETS. I'm glad I did it but was even more pleased when I was safe on the shore with a towel around my shivering body. I have never been in a swimsuit without a tan, I looked down at my body and decided that everything would look better with a tan, but I just don't care anymore about that; I'm happy to be alive and in Hawaii with the ones I love.

Just what the doctor ordered

Just what the doctor ordered

A prescription is written for rest and relaxation ... not necessarily from Doctor Northfelt (even though he did tell me it was the perfect time for me to do it), but it was written by Dr. Eric Williams. On a last-minute vacation to Hawaii. Friday, we boarded an airplane with Kaitlyn and Brian, and now I write this sitting on my bed in a beautiful condo on the Island of Oahu. I had only a few hours to get packed and ready. My stress and anxiety levels have been so high lately that this was just what the doctor ordered.

Brian has never been to Hawaii, and it's like watching a child open his gifts on Christmas. We were sitting in an ocean-view restaurant in Waikiki. Brian was staring out at the ocean when he jumped up and said: "I'm going to put my feet in that water," He ran off. We watched him run as fast as possible with no shoes on to the ocean water. It was so funny to watch him... Eric was looking at him like he was crazy. I thought he was so dang cute, and Kaitlyn was watching him like she had just fallen in love with him for the 1st time.

Brian woke up before the sun came up yesterday and rented a surfboard. Brian is one of those kinda guys that are good at anything he does, so we knew he would be good at surfing ..... and he was. Brian went snorkeling for the 1st time too; listening to him describe the fish he saw was animated and fun. I told him he needed to get some sunscreen on, but he decided to wait until after he went snorkeling for the 2nd time ...... you see where I'm going with this? Yes, he is a lobster today, on the 1st day of vacation.

Dr. Northfelt believes that stress in your life feeds VILLAIN cells, I'm almost done reading the book he suggested, and I will post more about it later, but I am feeling less stress and trying not to think about the VILLAIN while I am in Hawaii.

Holding Our Family in Prayer

Dear Frenchie, Today has been an incredibly difficult day. Blake called and asked whether Chloe had contacted me about a flight credit. ...
